The map has been widely used in society since its first publication in 2005. But its legends, which determine how much quality and quantity of geological information the map can provide, were created based on the stratigraphic divisions in the Geological Map of Japan (1:1,000,000) published in 1992. In the revision, the new legends are categorized into more than 2,400 types, compared with 386 in the previous version, with the latest geological knowledge. Also, the hierarchical legend system enables users to choose desired display depending on their purposes.
The revision is expected to enhance the utilization of geological information in broad range of areas such as civil engineering, construction, disaster mitigation, tourism industry, and resource exploration.
