Microphotographs of the basic granulite from the Main Zone of the Hidaka metamorphic belt, Hokkaido (left: plain polarized light; right: crossed polarized light)
The basic granulites occur along the western margin of a gabbroic body in the northern part of the metamorphic belt, and they show similarities in chemistry to normal mid-ocean ridge basalts. The rock in the photographs contains plagioclase, brown hornblende, orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene, and it is relatively coarse-grained and rich in pyroxenes. Pyroxenes often occur in contact with plagioclase crystals. The vertical length is about 2.6mm. [See Mikoshiba (Ujiie) in this issue. Sample No. 92100307.]
