Earthquakes and Active Faults
Active faults have repeatedly caused disastrous
earthquakes, and are likely to continue doing so. There
are many active faults throughout Japan and the
surrounding seas. AIST is conducting surveys to obtain the
movement data of active faults with a view to predicting
future earthquakes. This peeled specimen from a trench
wall of an active fault shows a fault running diagonally
downward from right to left just below the halfway point.
You will also note that the top half is shifted to the
right along the fault.
The other active faults throughout Japan are noted on the
pull-out map on the shelf.
