Volcanoes and hot springs of Japan
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) designates volcanoes which have erupted within the last 10,000 years or have fumarolic activities as "active volcanoes." Their numbers vary according to the progress of the surveys. Currently, however, there are 110 volcanoes designated as being active. The limitations in the location of volcanoes is due to a disproportionate deep underground temperature distribution. Though the location of many hot springs is linked to volcanic activity near by, there are other hot springs located in unrelated areas.
