Creation and utilization of a geologic map
At GSJ, we are creating geologic maps. Geologic maps provide information on the types of rock and earth-found beneath the vegetation and soil. Experts conduct a total of 250 days of field research in order to create a sheet of 1/50,000th scale geologic map of an area 20 km by 25 km. Japan is divided into around 1,300 sheets of 1/50,000th scale geologic maps, and the surveys by AIST are ongoing. The wall panel outlines the process of creating geologic maps, as well as their method of utilization. There are a variety of scale sizes for geologic maps. For instance, a 1/1,000,000th geologic map allows us to identify the types of rock and soil we have in Japan at a glance.
