Usu Volcano viewed from the northwest. The volcano consists of a stratocone of basalt and basaltic andesite with a summit crater 1.8 km in diameter and many lava domes and cryptdomes. Ousu Lava Dome, Usu-shinzan Cryptodome and Kousu Lava Dome are in the summit caldera. Showa-shinzan Lava Dome is on the eastern flank (left of the photo). The smoke at the center and right side of the photo is from the Kompira Yama and West Nishiyama Craters, respectively. (Photo by A.Tomiya on April 1, 2000)
