On Dec. 8, 2008, the Japan Geoparks Committee authorized 7 Japanese Geoparks of Mt. Apoi, Lake Toya & Mt. Usu, Itoigawa, South Alps (Median Tectonic Line), San'in Coast, Muroto, and Shimabara Peninsular. Those will join the Japanese Geoparks Network which will be launched on Feb. 20, 2009.

The International Geography Olympiad Japanese Comittee announced the program outline of the Asia Pacific Regional Geography Olympiad 2009 (APRGO2009) which will be held in Tsukuba, Japan, August 2009.

Tsukuba Declaration has been adopted by the participants in the four “IGY+50” programs – the International Polar Year (IPY), the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE), the Electronic Geophysical Year (eGY), and the International Heliophysical Year (IHY) – which mark the 50-year anniversary of the International Geophysical Year (IGY), meeting in Tsukuba, Japan on 10-13th November 2008.

The Japan Geoparks Committee has designated three areas, Toyako-Usu, Itoigawa, and Shimabara Peninsula, as candidate sites to join the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) on Monday, October 20. Three areas are supposed to submit the application for the GGN later this year. The first Global Geoparks are expected to open in Japan by the end of the coming year.
