History of the GSJ and Geological Museum

This page contains a time line of major events in the history of the GSJ and the
Geological Museum. We are geologists and we read history from the bottom
up because, in most cases, younger rocks are emplaced above older ones.
So, the oldest events in this time line are at the bottom.

As you can see from the stratigraphic column on the left, the seemingly long history of
the GSJ is quite short when compared to geological processes, such as sedimentation.
The majority of the sediment layers in the column are volcanic ash beds deposited by
the mutiple eruptions, which formed Mt. Fuji. Scroll up to view the timeline.
